2010 Season New Zealand --
The New Zealand export season finished at around 320,000 trays (12,800 tonnes), about the same level that
the season has been at for the last three years now .
The main markets for the 2010 export crop were Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and
Singapore. Malaysia and Singapore have traditionaly been amongst our top markets by volume.
Australia is a natural export market fro NZ because of its proximity and similar trading
environment. For the last decade or so, we have had preclearance programmes in NZ. This means
that product is inspected in NZ prior to export, and this removes much of the risk of failing
inspection at the border, and then incurring costs of treatment. Over this period exports rose
significantly and Australia now is consistently one of our top performing destinations, being
greatest by far in 2010.
Thailand has grown to its position as a top market, on the back of the free trade agreement
which was finalised in 2005. This agreement lowered tariffs and opened the way for increased
volumes. There have been years (2006 to 2008) when Thailand was NZ's largest export market.
